Choosing a career, not a job

In today's highly competitive job market, the most important mission for any job hunter is not just finding a job but choosing the right career as well.

Research has proved that a highly successful professional is one who looks for the right career, knowing what he wants and what he can succeed in.

Many university graduates and even some professionals with experience in different industries fail to identify the right job where they can have a successful and enjoyable career.

If you are a university student who is about to graduate or an experienced professional who is looking for a career change, find time to think about what you want in your career. Do not be attracted to something that offers only a good salary. If it does not match your ambitions or skills, it will not work out no matter how hard you try. For example, if you are not good in dealing with numbers, do not jump into a career in accounting and finance expecting to become a CFO of an international organisation.

It is also important to ensure you are choosing a career that you will enjoy and fits your personal life and goals. For example, if you have decided to become an investment banker or consultant at a leading organisation, do not expect to have a reasonable work-life balance.

Think about what sort of person you are and understand where your strengths and weaknesses lie, the qualifications you hold and what you enjoy. Do as much research as possible on different careers and industries to understand what is required.

Always create a plan for the future to help you feel energized and better cope with the difficulties of the present.

Remember, choose a career and not a job.
