Know how to be a game changer with your character

This is a story of a person who decided to give interesting life lessons to his daughter. One by one, he put potatoes, eggs and coffee beans in a pot of boiling water. He pointed out that each had faced the same adversity – the boiling water. However, each came out differently. The potato, which was strong, hard and unrelenting, became soft and weak. The egg, with a thin fragile outer shell, became hard within, while the ground coffee beans changed the water and created something new.

Now, ask yourself who you are and what you actually become when adversity knocks on your door. How do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean? Your answer will determine your character.

If you lack flexibility like the potato and resist change in your surroundings, it will crack you open. If you are sensitive, vulnerable and soft inside like an egg, hardships, challenges and changes will shape you differently. But if you are soft and malleable like a coffee bean, then you are a ''game changer.'' Your adaptability to the changes in the environment, e.g. the workplace, will make you successful.

There are days in the workplace when things are not the way you had hoped they would be. That is when you have to tell yourself that things will get better. There will be challenges to face and changes to make in your career; it is up to you to accept them. Challenges and changes will help you reach your goals as long as you are flexible enough to deal with them.

Remember, there are no perfect workplace, perfect job and perfect people in this imperfect world. So, be like the coffee bean in all domains of your life. Maximize all your positive characteristics to overcome the difficulties in your professional and personal life.

Handy Hints:

• Never resist change and be always open to something different

• Be inspired by the challenges and changes that come your way

• Being flexible means accepting things as they are and moving on
