In many companies, good performers are automatically promoted to managerial roles. However, they are not always selected for their leadership potential or given the training to develop their management skills before they start. Below are a few pointers to think about:

• Lead by example – A good leader practises what he preaches. You do not need to be the best performer in the team that you lead, but you must set the right example to be someone whom people naturally follow.

• Provide the right platform for your team – Your role as a manager is to serve those who work for you, not vice versa. Ensure they have the right environment, tools, support and motivation they need.

• Handle competition – Competition is common within teams, particularly in a sales environment. It can be healthy and necessary. But if it goes from being constructive to destructive, nip it in the bud quickly.

• Take a broad view – A key element of your role is to take a step back. You are there to coordinate and provide direction. Do you have defined objectives? How are you performing against these? Are your team members clear on your vision? How do their roles fit within that?

• An emphasis on team – Team members perform better if they feel part of a unit with identity. Create opportunities for team bonding in more social settings. Set expectations early on, and encourage them to support each other and consider different personalities so they can relate to one another more effectively.

• Self-awareness – A team is directly impacted by its leader. Consider how your mood can impact your team’s morale. Check in with yourself every three months to see if you have developed your management skills and achieved your objectives, and think what you can do differently.

• Delegation and administration – To lead effectively, you must manage the operational aspects of your team consistently and efficiently, and quickly recognise when certain tasks should be delegated to others.
