In my career, I have had the privilege of working with many wonderful leaders. There have been times when I have wondered whether a team makes a great leader or whether a good leader makes a great team.
Looking back and based on my personal experience with strategic leaders I personally know, I feel it is the leaders who make a team great, good or bad. The role of leaders is very crucial for the success of a team. A team that comprises many brilliant individuals but without a great leader will not be able to catch up with a mediocre team led by an inspiring leader.
The leaders who moulded me were more than just leaders. They were role models. Their influence extended beyond the professional sphere and encompassed my personal life. I believe that great leaders go beyond their scope to make things better for their team members.
As market dynamics change, the role of the leader also changes. A leader in a multicultural organisation has to deal with a wide range of elements including language and cultural differences. Apart from this, the leader has to address the different exposures that the team members have had and maximise all the resources available in order to achieve organisational goals. This is essential to get the best out of the team.
During situations where differences of opinion creep up, a great leader can provide the necessary encouragement for the team members to come out with their views, thereby enhancing their morale and improving their confidence.
In today's dynamic corporate world, confidence makes a big difference between winning and losing. There have been instances when strong teams crumbled and performed below expectations due to lack of confidence and because there was no strong leader to guide them and show them the way.
• A good leader confidently leads his team in the right direction
• He maintains high standards and aims for overall excellence
• He is passionate and brings out the best from his members
