Job DescriptionThe Associate position is a full time position located in the Urban Informatics Lab. The Associate is expected to be involved with various projects of the UIL, including leading and managing particular processes within the Lab. The ideal candidate would be comfortable with applying statistical analysis techniques for solving urban problems in a data scarce environment. The candidate should be comfortable working in a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment and be able to manage multiple projects and deadlines. The candidate should have prior experience in any of the following applied economics, applied statistics, geo-spatial analysis and/or software coding in the development sector, information science including data design and communication.The position will involve data analysis, data visualization, as well as writing reports and translating findings into outputs for various media, including print publications and digital media. In addition to providing support for IIHS research and practice projects, the Associate will also provide teaching support for quantitative research methods. She/he will collate data sets from various sources such as the Census, NSSO, Economic Census, Annual Survey of Industries, National Family Health Survey, as well as geo-spatial data from multiple sources.In addition to collating secondary data sets, the Associate will assist in primary data collection through surveys. The Associate will be working on projects related to small enterprise development, urban sanitation, transport, housing, and land markets. She/he will be responsible for preparing outward-facing materials and presentations on key urbanization trends, including demographic and economic analyses as well as related to other aspects of urbanization. She/he will work closely with members of other teams on a range of analytical tasks.Activities and TasksThe responsibilities would include, but not be limited to, the followingProposing and executing quantitative solutions to various problems across IIHS research and practice projects;Application of known quantitative methodologies as well as development of new and innovative methodologies to build a deeper understanding of urban India;Assistance with collection of primary data, as well as preparation of secondary data for analysis collation, cleaning and validation;Preparation of outward-facing materials and presentations on key urban demographic and economic trends;Translation of insights from quantitative analysis for academic writing, practice reports, and popular media, including thinking through data design and communication;Providing writing assistance on reports, academic papers and other outputs;Assistance on teaching particular aspects of quantitative research methods or data visualization for IIHS teaching and training programs;Other research and institutional tasks as and when required.This offer is on an exclusive basis, which implies that other professional assignments (whether compensated or not) that bear a potential conflict of interest with IIHS cannot be undertaken.Structure and ReportingThe candidate will directly report to the Consultant/Lead position in charge of the Urban Informatics Lab. The UIL reports to the Director, IIHS.Person Specification3-5 years work experience;Post-Graduate education in Economics / Mathematics / Statistics / Development Studies / Urban Planning / Public Policy with strong skills in Data Analysis;GIS and coding skills are an added advantage;Proficient in Excel/ STATA/ R/ SPSS;Familiarity with design software is an added advantage;Prior exposure to the datasets mentioned above;Interested in urban centric research;Should be comfortable working with inter-disciplinary teams;Teaching experience is an added advantage.
