The engineer will work with the internal Seagate team, its customers, and the object store industry to develop a resilient, high performing storage platform. The position requires system development experience and ideally experience with Linux kernel programming and Lustre or other cluster file system, although experience with other file systems will be considered.The Software Engineer is responsible for completing individual deliverables according to company objectives, policies, and guidelines.Project OverviewSeagate is developing a new storage software platform designed for a wide range of deployments ranging from cloud object stores to upcoming exascale HPC systems, and focused on scalability, extensibility and reuse. The developer will work in server (C, user space) and client (Linux kernel) environments and deal with issues including large scale data organization, algorithm scalability, asynchronous communication, efficient concurrency, reliability and fault tolerance.Essential Job functions & ResponsibilitiesUnderstands the implementation details of the storage system at the source code level.Debugs performance and reliability issues of the storage system.Modifies source code to improve performance, enhance stability, and to fix defects.Implements feature enhancements to the source code.Documents designs and code clearly in English language.Communicates with team and managers to develop optimal solutions and report progress.Collaborates with other development teams to ensure full integration of all parts of the system.Researches and evaluates alternative approaches to assist in developing solutions. Shares best practices with partners and peer groups.Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesUnderstanding of storage system architectures storage media types, communication media and protocols. Typical capacity, throughput and latency values, failure modes.Understanding modern server architectures processors, caches, cores, NUMA, concurrency control mechanisms.Thorough understanding of the C programming language and tools (compilers, linkers, profilers, etc.).Understanding of the basic UNIX programming interfaces (POSIX) and structure of a UNIX kernel (VFS, inodes, buffer cache, page cache, processes, signals, interrupts, scheduler, memory management).Understanding of and experience with concurrent programming.Some understanding of distributed systems is desired (shared memory vs. message passing, asynchronous systems, two phase commit, Paxos).Some Linux kernel development experience is desired.Some experience with Linux filesystems is highly desired.Understanding of and experience with industry software development processes and practices.Knowledge of software development life-cycle.Basic understanding of functional groups related to engineering (i.e., documentation, release engineering, etc.).Actively pursues opportunities for learning and self-development.Education & ExperienceBachelor's degree (CS, EE or Math preferred) or equivalent work experience.Experience working in creative problem-solving environments. QualificationsJob typically requires a college degree in a engineering field or applied sciences. IT Engineers typically require a college degree in computer engineering or computer science. Engineers in IT typically work with hardware and network connectivity instead of computer programming (which is done by Programmer/Analyst or Systems. Analyst classifications). Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience. At this level, post-graduate coursework may be desirable.
